Donaven Nolze, Anthony Bauman and Jim R. DeBordThe inaugural Jim. R. DeBord Scholarship has been awarded to two students in the heavy equipment operator technology program at the Hastings Campus.

Anthony Bauman (center) of Blue Hill and Donaven Nolze (left) of O’Neill each received $1,000 to help cover educational expenses.

“I’m just really speechless,” said Bauman. “I can’t believe I really got the scholarship. Just looking at the class, I thought there were a lot better (potential) scholarship winners. I can’t express enough how much this means to me. It’s really a blessing to have.”

“This scholarship is going to go to a great cause as I finish my year,” said Nolze. “I’m really grateful for the (DeBord) family for giving me this opportunity. It’s just great.”

Ron and Tammy DeBord established the scholarship in honor of Ron’s father, Jim (right), who worked in the heavy equipment field for more than three decades. During that time, the elder DeBord gained a high level of hands-on proficiency with several types of machinery such as motor graders, dozers and front-end loaders. Operating heavy equipment allowed Jim to perfect his craft while basking in his love for the outdoors.

“I think it’s wonderful,” said Jim about the scholarship that bears his name. “I think this is great for these young guys and hopefully some time, some young ladies too. I just really appreciate all this.”

Two scholarships will be given each year to students in the heavy equipment operator technology program. A plaque displaying all of the scholarship recipients will be placed in the Howard Building, which houses the program.
